TechCrunch, 2026-08-06: Tesla and SpaceX confirmed "Terafab", the chip factory they are jointly developing, will be built in Grimes County, Texas, with an initial $16.8B investment; SpaceX has suggested in filings it may spend as much as $119B across a multi-phase plan, and Intel "has said it will contribute to the Terafab project, although it's been cagey about its exact contributions." A Grimes County agreement (signed 2026-06-22 per KBTX/Gray Local Media reporting) names SpaceX, not a Terafab entity, as the county's counterparty. Construction does not start until 2026-12-01 per Texas filings. EE Times quotes Yole Group analyst Adrien Sanchez reading the project as "likely more an Intel fab expansion with Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI as anchor customers, rather than a standalone manufacturing venture" (eetimes.com/intel-enters-pact-with-tesla-and-spacex-for-terafab/). The "one terawatt of AI compute per year" headline is not repeated here -- it has no industry-standard definition.
